Believe it or not you have agreed to the above the first time you turned your computer on, it's part of the End User Licence Agreement for Windows.
What they don't tell you is the following, which you should always bear in mind when doing anything with your computer.
- Always backup any important documents on a regular basis and before carrying out any changes to your computer.
- Such changes include installing any new software or programs, removing software or programs, adding new hardware (even peripherals such as printers) and before leaving your computer switched off for an extended period (going on holiday for example).
- Always assume that you are going to loose everything stored on your computer and plan your backup strategy accordingly. Failure to do so will result in Murphy's Law being applied at the most inopportune moment leading to maximum loss.
- Always assume that everything - every key stroke, every file, every password or credit card number - that has been placed on your computer is fully recoverable. If your computer is stolen or lost change all passwords and inform card issuers asking for advice. If you buy a new computer make sure your old computer's hard drive is securely erased or destroyed. For "advice" on hard drive destruction see this article from PC Pro. The hammer option comes highly recommended - good fun too!
